BEFORE an Earthquake (Preparation)
1. Strengthen your home
- Make sure your building is earthquake-resistant.
- Secure heavy furniture to walls.
- Keep gas cylinders, shelves, and electrical items tightly fixed.
2. Prepare an Emergency Bag
Include:
- Water (3 days' supply)
- Dry food
- Torchlight + batteries
- Power bank
- First-aid kit
- Necessary medicines
- Copies of important documents
- Whistle (to call for help if trapped)
3. Plan Escape Routes
- Know safe open areas around you.
- Teach your family where to gather after shaking stops.
DURING an Earthquake (What Saves Lives)
If You’re Indoors
? Do NOT run outside during shaking! (Most deaths happen from falling bricks & glass)
Follow DROP > COVER > HOLD ON
- DROP to the ground
- COVER under a strong table/desk or cover your head & neck
- HOLD ON until shaking stops
Avoid:
- Windows
- Glass
- Heavy furniture
- Elevators
If no table is nearby:
- Sit near an interior wall
- Protect your head with your hands or a pillow
If You’re in Bed
- Stay in bed.
- Protect your head with a pillow.
- Getting up increases the risk of falling objects.
If You’re Outside
Move to an open area away from:
- Buildings
- Trees
- Power lines
- Bridges or flyovers
If You’re in a Car
- Stop the car safely.
- Do not park under bridges or tall buildings.
- Stay inside until shaking stops.
AFTER an Earthquake
1. Prepare for Aftershocks
They can be strong and dangerous.
2. Check for hazards
- Gas leaks
- Electrical sparks
- Broken water lines
If you smell gas → turn off the main valve and leave the building.
3. Do not use matches or switches immediately
Risk of explosion if gas is leaking.
4. Help injured people
But avoid moving seriously injured persons unless necessary.
5. Listen to official instructions
Use radio/phone only if needed.
If You Are Trapped
- Do not shout continuously (saves oxygen).
- Tap on a pipe or wall.
- Use a whistle if available.
- Cover your nose/mouth from dust.
